It's after 1 o'clock in the morning, but I am determined to post to my badly neglected blog before the sun comes up tomorrow. So much has happened in the last 7 weeks, it is unreal. Long story short - we have been fostering the most beautiful baby boy, who for the sake of anonymity in this blog will be called cc.
This past Tuesday turned out to be a very good day. We found out cc will be with us for another three months after thinking he was going to be moved any day. Perhaps I will share more about this at some point, but for now we're breathing a deep sigh of relief. I am going to enjoy every minute of the next 90 days without worrying about any future point in time - this is my pledge!
The last 48 days have been the most wonderful and beautiful, yet the most heartwrenching, frightening time of our lives. We have wanted to be parents for so very long, and on March 7 we were just going about our lives thinking it wasn't going to happen any time soon. I had even let my boss know a few days earlier that she could expect me to stick around for awhile and that I was really enjoying my job. I also had some new yoga teaching opportunities and felt quite happy with my life, and Chris had expressed the same. It was a stormy Friday, and I was planning to leave work early to head out of town for my nephew and my mom's birthdays. But about an hour and a half before I was to leave, we got THE CALL, and within three hours we were parents.
We met cc at the hospital in one of those hospital bassinets. He was wheeled into the nursery room, where we were waiting, by a nurse who was completely nonchalant about the whole thing. We almost felt we had to keep our excitement under wraps, but I insisted Chris take a picture. cc was asleep when we first saw him - a robust angel baby with a head full of dark hair and a serene face. Before long he awoke and was ready to be fed. I gave him his first bottle in that room at the hospital, and Chris took the first picture of us together. After taking care of some paperwork and getting some "instructions" from the nurse, (most of which went in one ear and out the other - I was so focused on cc!), it was time to go home. We were elated to say the least.
That was probably one of the easiest days we've had since cc came into our lives. We've learned that dealing with the foster care system is definitely not easy. We were prepared for fostering to be challenging, but we weren't prepared for this part. Apparently, we're too eager to be cc's parents. I guess we're supposed to love him, but not too much - that's the message we keep getting. I say screw that (excuse the language). Even if he's only with us for a short while, we are going to give him our best. He is our first child, regardless of whether he is legally our son, and we can't help but love him completely.
My baby calls, so I must close for now. We are finally resting easy, and I'm going to trust that the universe will just let us all be for these next few months. More to come on cc, though no promises about when! He is a 24/7 kind of kid. :)
